When was Mondadori founded?
Arnoldo Mondadori began his publishing activities in 1907, at the age of only eighteen, with the publication of the magazine Luce!. In 1911 he published his first book, Aia Madama by Tomaso Monicelli, and created the first book series, La Lampada, dedicated to children’s literature.

For how many years has the Group been measuring its sustainability?
We formally set out on the path to sustainability in September 2010 with the establishment of the Sustainability Committee, the subsequent approval of the Sustainability Plan and the first edition of the report for internal distribution and use.

How are topics selected for inclusion in the Sustainability Report?
During a series of workshops, Mondadori’s Sustainability Committee conducts a materiality analysis to determine the most significant sustainability issues, both inside the company and for its main stakeholders. The analysis is repeated once a year.

How are business ethics guaranteed?
The reputation that the Group has built up over its hundred years of doing business is also based on compliance with ethical standards defined by laws, regulations and governance codes in the daily operations of all of its companies.
In 2012 we drew up a new version of our Code of Ethics. Implementation of the Code is ensured by the presence of the supervision and control body, by the Control and Risk Committee and by the Internal Audit function, in their respective roles.

How do you guarantee that sustainability is respected by suppliers?
With a view to increasing our responsibility towards customers, we increasingly strive to take over the management of products from external suppliers.
In order to protect the company and its customers against activities that are not in line with our principles, in our contracts/orders we specify compliance with:
- the Mondadori Code of Ethics;
- European regulations;
- minimum worker age: 14 years.
With regard to responsible procurement, we have established a series of global standards in our new Code of Ethics for the management of suppliers in the following areas: social obligations and safety requirements, selection criteria, evaluation, fairness, gifts, control.

The identification process has enables more than 40 categories of stakeholders to be identified, classified according to two criteria – dependence on and influence on the company – and grouped into uniform categories.

Contributing to the region’s sustainable development is one of our key commitments in terms of social responsibility. What is the environmental impact of Mondadori’s products and their production cycle?
As a result of the outsourcing of printing activities that has taken place in recent years, Mondadori’s activities may, to a large extent, be considered to be tertiary. This means that direct environmental aspects are limited to energy and water consumption and the consumption of materials (mainly from packaging) and the associated environmental impacts.

What is the Fondazione Arnoldo e Alberto Mondadori?
The Fondazione Arnoldo e Alberto Mondadori is a non-profit organisation, recognised by the President of the Republic in April 1979. Established with the aim of conserving, investing and making available to the public the funds of Arnoldo and Alberto Mondadori, it has become a centre for study and research on Italy’s publishing culture since the mid-nineties. The Foundation’s activities are currently focused on three areas: protecting the historical memory of the publishing industry, promoting research into the role of cultural mediation and spreading a publishing culture. What is Mediafriends?
Mediafriends is a non-profit social fund established in 2003 by R.T.I., Mondadori and Medusa with the aim of creating, producing and promoting events aimed at raising funds for charity.
The Association aims to better coordinate the communicative skills of R.T.I., Mondadori and Medusa with a view to achieving better results in fund raising and building awareness of the causes identified.
Mediafriends’ first project was “La fabbrica del sorriso” (the Smile Factory), a gathering of Italy’s most popular comedians in an effort to raise money for disadvantaged children. For the occasion, Mondadori published the book La Fabbrica del Sorriso – comici per un mondo migliore, which was sold in bookshops and combined with a number of the group’s magazines. All of the profits made from the initiative were donated to “La Fabbrica del Sorriso”.
