From the Baroque tradition of grand urban scenographies to contemporary experimentation, temporary architecture continues to be fertile ground for connecting design, art, craftsmanship, and innovation. This is the common thread of Ephemeral Architectures, the event promoted by INTERNI, the interior and contemporary design magazine directed by Gilda Bojardi, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute in London.

The appointment will take place Monday, 14 September 2026 at 6:30 PM (with doors opening at 6:00 PM) at Casa Italia (4-5 Buckingham Gate, London SW1E 6JP). Since July 2026, this historic building—located just a few steps from Buckingham Palace—has served as the new headquarters for the Embassy of Italy, the Italian Cultural Institute, and the ITA, bringing together under one roof the different components of the Italian System, fostering dialogue between culture, art, economy, and creativity. The spaces, created with contributions from numerous Italian design and furniture companies and enriched by works of modern and contemporary art, reflect the venue’s mission to promote Italian excellence and creativity.

It is against this backdrop, where tradition and innovation coexist, that a reflection on the origins and evolution of temporary architecture takes place. Its roots lie in the history of major European cities: starting from the Renaissance, Rome was famous for the scenographic backdrops and temporary structures designed by architects to welcome kings, ambassadors, and prominent figures—a tradition shared by other Italian cities that also developed across the Channel, in Elizabethan London, with agile and spectacular stagings. Over time, this heritage has assumed new forms, giving rise to increasingly experimental ways of intervening in space and establishing a direct relationship with the public.

In the contemporary world, one of the most significant expressions of temporary architecture is found in FuoriSalone and in the exhibition-event that INTERNI organizes every year in Milan, where international architects and designers create interventions designed for temporary enjoyment. The vocation for spatial transformation also characterizes exhibitions, displays, and showrooms, where the scenic setting helps construct a narrative and reinforce brand identity.

The London event will delve into the role of installation design as a planning practice, exploring its potential and the dialogue between artisanal knowledge, industrial techniques, and new technologies. This exchange also highlights the ability of Made in Italy to combine tradition and innovation, manual skills, and research.

The evening will also provide an opportunity to present Milano Design Hub & Spoke, INTERNI’s monograph dedicated to Milan, the international epicenter of Italian design. The volume tells the story of a city that has become a global laboratory and point of reference, thanks to the presence of prestigious flagship stores and the realization of major contract projects internationally.

Sharing their perspectives will be Carolina Gismondi de Bevilacqua, Vice President and Chief Product Strategy Officer of Artemide Architetto; Carola Migliore, architect and co-Founder of Reality Is__; and Christina Seilern, Founder and Principal of Studio Seilern Architects. The talk will be moderated by Carlo Biasia, Architect for INTERNI.
