Mondadori Store: all the initiatives to wait for Christmas together

Christmas elves take over Mondadori bookshops: the magic of the holidays comes to life among books, lights and countless surprises

Mondadori Store, the largest network of bookshops in Italy, is getting ready to celebrate Christmas by transforming its spaces throughout the entire month of December into even more welcoming places, filled with light, emotion, solidarity and magic.

CHRISTMAS ELVES

Until 6 January, the bookshops in the Mondadori Store network will be transformed by a warm and playful festive atmosphere, with a completely renewed Christmas layout. A colourful, fairytale-inspired “family” of elves will welcome visitors among the shelves and window displays, accompanied by dedicated decorations and gift-wrapping materials.
The visual identity, designed by the agency Altavia Italia with illustrations by Chiara Fajella, reinterprets traditional Christmas imagery through a fresh, vintage-flavoured lens.
At the heart of this world are the elves, who interact with books in an enchanting, imaginative setting, inviting adults and children alike to rediscover the pleasure of spending time together and to let themselves be carried away by the magic of stories.

A SPECIAL FESTIVE GIFT: INTRODUCING LUMIVERSO

For the Christmas season returns Mondadori Store’s major holiday campaign, featuring a new exclusive gift: Lumiverso, the magical book that turns into a lamp to illuminate your favourite stories. Its decorative elements combine emotion, constellations and imagination, recalling the refinement of antique books while adding a contemporary touch. A unique gift created to celebrate the power of imagination and to make the wait for Christmas shine even brighter. Lumiverso is available from 1 to 24 December with the purchase of at least three Mondadori Group books, both in participating stores and on mondadoristore.it.

INITIATIVES AT MONDADORI DUOMO

Mondadori Duomo is also preparing for Christmas with a rich programme of special initiatives and events. From 9 to 22 December, the Milan bookstore will host a dedicated Mattel pop-up store, designed for fans of toys and of some of the most iconic stories ever created.
With this new shop-in-shop, Mattel celebrates its 80th anniversary through an immersive space dedicated to adults who have never stopped playing. An experience inspired by the concept “Never Too Old to Play”, inviting visitors to discover the Mattel universe through its most iconic collections – including Barbie Signature, Hot Wheels Premium, the new Mattel Brick Shop and Mattel Games, along with many other surprises. The space will also feature special activities and irresistible photo opportunities.

A family day dedicated to Christmas

Mondadori Duomo is also organising a special family day to get ready for Christmas. On Sunday 14 December, adults and children are invited to take part in a series of events with authors, books and a very special guest: from 11 a.m. and throughout the day, little Elf Giulia will be wandering among the shelves to chat with the youngest visitors and collect all their letters for Santa Claus in a very special postbox, destined straight for the North Pole.

At 11 a.m. there will also be readings of excerpts from Sulla slitta con Babbo Natale (Emme Edizioni) and Le più belle storie di Gianni Rodari (Einaudi Ragazzi), read by Mondadori Duomo bookseller Silvia Neri, highlighting the close relationship between the bookshop and its community.

At 11.30 a.m., the book Chi ti ha detto che Babbo Natale non esiste? (Edizioni Piemme) will be presented with the author Vernante Pallotti and illustrator Giada Carboni.  After the reading and games, there will be a signing session with plenty of personalised drawings.

To celebrate the approaching Christmas season, at 4 p.m. a spectacular concert will take place inside the bookshop – featuring the most beloved Christmas songs, reminding us what Christmas is and how powerful its magic can be – performed by the Piccoli Cantori di Milano choir, directed and curated by Laura Marcora.

Finally, from 5 p.m., in the children’s and young readers’ area, little Elf Giulia will read a story to everyone present so they can prepare together for the arrival of Christmas.

MONDADORI STORE FOR STILL I RISE: TOGETHER AT CHRISTMAS TO BUILD THE FUTURE

As every year, Christmas at Mondadori Store will also be an opportunity for solidarity, with a special charity gift-wrapping campaign supporting, for the first time, Still I Rise, the non-profit organisation that provides high-quality education to refugee and vulnerable children around the world.
From 5 to 24 December, in more than 50 Mondadori bookshops across over 40 Italian cities, volunteers and staff from Still I Rise will be in store to wrap Christmas gifts and collect donations. A simple gesture that becomes real support: the proceeds from the initiative will contribute to the creation of the very first Still I Rise International School in Italy.
The collaboration with Still I Rise is part of Mondadori Store’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to culture and creating new opportunities for growth through books, offering educational prospects even to those living in challenging contexts.

PariPasso is born, the new Rizzoli Education project for inclusion

PariPasso will be applied in Rizzoli Education’s textbooks and in a series of services and content supporting all components of the school community

The guiding principles of the project are also the basis of the publishing house’s Manifesto to promote a culture of inclusion

Rizzoli Education, a school publisher long committed to delivering high-quality educational content and innovative learning tools, presents PariPasso, a new project dedicated to inclusion and to teaching and learning practices built around inclusive education. The initiative is deeply rooted in the company’s history and identity, and it takes shape across content, activities, study methods and teaching approaches promoted by the publisher.

“PariPasso (literally “step by step together,” evoking the idea of moving forward at the same pace, side by side) builds on an established editorial practice that places the principle of inclusion at the centre of our work and draws inspiration from it in both our publishing and our training programmes, as shown by the work carried out on gender equality,” says Annalisa Aceti, General Manager Sales & Marketing of Rizzoli Education. We chose to integrate inclusion into every phase of the editorial process, not as a separate project but as a transversal benchmark of quality. From 2026 onwards, PariPasso will guide all new titles for primary and lower-secondary school, offering a concrete, systematic response to the challenges of inclusion. This commitment translates into books, digital resources, teaching tools and training pathways. The name PariPasso evokes collaboration, recognising that learning is a shared journey. Walking “a pari passo” with schools means supporting teachers, students and families in pursuing a common goal: building a school that is truly fair, innovative and capable of valuing uniqueness as a resource.”

Validated by a scientific committee of leading experts, ,PariPasso is grounded in several key principles:the design of teaching tools tailored to different cognitive styles and learning rhythms; the adoption of personalised and meaningful teaching and learning practices, including digital content and tools; the enhancement of every learner, ensuring that each student can achieve educational success; and the promotion of teaching deeply connected to active, critical and responsible citizenship.

THE PARIPASSO MANIFESTO

This policy brings together the core values of the project in a single declaration of intent, articulated through its main guidelines and objectives:

  • there is no such thing as inclusive teaching separate from “traditional” teaching
  • a personalised and universal pedagogical approach
  • personalising teaching to achieve solid and long-lasting learning
  • inclusive teaching as a context that promotes educational relationships
  • “essential knowledge,” but also depth and dialogue between disciplines
  • promoting reflection on methods and processes
  • technology and teaching innovation as allies of inclusion
  • inclusion as a shared objective
  • school inclusion and social inclusion

“In Italian schools today,” says Aaron Buttarelli, General Manager Editorial Area of Rizzoli Education, “teaching based on an inclusive approach is guaranteed at a regulatory level, but everyday practice is much more complicated, given the strong differentiation and heterogeneity found in classrooms. PariPasso was created to promote, support and encourage a culture of inclusion. By its nature, it is an open and continually updated path. The principles stated in the Manifesto will be the guide we will follow in the design and implementation of all our educational activities in the broadest sense, for teachers and students, starting with school textbooks.”

THE SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE

PariPasso is an inclusion project with a solid scientific foundation, validated by a committee of experts who share the guidelines and supervise the quality of the project, ensuring its effectiveness and consistency with educational goals.

The committee includes Giorgia Ortu La Barbera (psychologist), Roberto Trinchero (Professor of Experimental Pedagogy at the Department of Philosophy and Education Sciences, University of Turin), Fondazione Bullone, Centro Leonardo, and Fondazione Mondo Digitale ETS.

The members of the Committee will take part in live and in-person training events organised by the publishing house, bringing their voice and field experience while offering insights, in-depth analysis and strategies on specific topics related to inclusion.

ACTIONS

PariPasso will find clear and visible application first of all in Rizzoli Education textbooks and, over time, will provide a set of services and content to support all components of the school community: communicative and didactic accessibility of all content, continuing specialised training for teachers on the project’s themes, livestreams and more than 30 events across the country between February and April, articles and best-practice features on the publisher’s website to address the topic at school, content on the digital learning platform HUB Scuola, contests and podcasts.

New concept for Palazzo Niemeyer: redesigned spaces for the Mondadori Group headquarters

The goal of the project carried out by Generali Real Estate and the Mondadori Group was to enhance an iconic architectural work through innovation and sustainability

The project is signed by the international firm CRA–Carlo Ratti Associati

Palazzo Niemeyer, a masterpiece by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer (1907–2012) and the headquarters of the Mondadori Group since 1975, has undergone a major renovation, including interior refurbishment and redevelopment.

Two key concepts guided the design of the project: identity and coherence. The goal was to enhance the building, in Segrate, on the outskirts of Milan, while respecting the distinctive character of Niemeyer’s work, reinterpreting it in a contemporary way through innovative, functional and sustainable solutions that strengthen the collaborative nature of the open space areas that were part of the original project.

“The redevelopment of Palazzo Niemeyer has been an important opportunity to give new life to, and celebrate fifty years after its inauguration, a place that is an integral part of our identity and our history, as well as an example of architecture of international relevance,” said Antonio Porro, CEO of the Mondadori Group. “This significant intervention has allowed us to make our headquarters even more efficient, sustainable and inclusive. It is a new working environment that reflects the values we embrace every day: openness, innovation and care for people,” Porro concluded.

The works, which covered a total area of more than 20,000 square meters, were carried out by Generali Real Estate owner of the building through the Mascagni fund managed by Generali Real Estate SGR – together with the Mondadori Group.

“Palazzo Niemeyer is one of the most well-known and iconic buildings in Generali’s real estate portfolio. We are proud to have completed a high-quality project that has renewed the contemporary value of the building, bringing it in line with a more modern and flexible approach to workplaces and with new technological and energy solutions, while preserving its unique historical and architectural identity. I would like to thank our team, who brought expertise and passion to this important project,” said Benedetto Giustiniani, Head of Southern Europe Region at Generali Real Estate.

This major redevelopment project was designed by the international architecture firm CRA Carlo Ratti Associati, under the creative direction of Carlo Ratti, founding partner and curator of the 2025 Architecture Biennale, in collaboration with Italo Rota (1953–2024), one of the most influential interpreters of Italian architecture.

Their vision led to a radical reinterpretation of the office layout, addressing the needs that have emerged in recent years for coexistence between in-person work and flexibility.

The spaces have been completely redesigned with new open space workstations that further encourage creativity and collaboration among colleagues, alongside shared areas, concentration zones and social spaces. The result is an open, fluid environment filled with greenery and in constant dialogue with the surrounding landscape.

«“To step outside the comfort zone of Zoom calls, we must redesign the office as a space that is worth the trip,” said Carlo Ratti, founding partner of CRA Carlo Ratti Associati. “Starting from Oscar Niemeyer’s iconic design and the USM furniture he selected, we dismantled and reassembled each piece in new configurations, integrating wood, recycled materials, nature and an exclusive selection of Italian design objects. The result? A catalog of environments, from open to more intimate, where everyone can find their comfort zone and where collaboration and innovation can truly flourish.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Launched in January 2023, the Palazzo Niemeyer redevelopment project is the result of collaboration between the Real Estate teams of the Mondadori Group, led by architect Chiara Capuzzi, Generali Real Estate, and the international studio CRA Carlo Ratti Associati.

The focus areas of the intervention were:

  • The redesign of the interior layout across all five levels of the building, featuring flexible and multifunctional areas, open space workstations alternating with individual work zones, meeting rooms and phone booths equipped with the latest technologies, agoras, lounge areas, break spaces and service areas.
  • Restoration and enhancement of the building’s original furniture, with the regeneration of more than 1,300 modules from Swiss manufacturer USM Haller, dismantled and reassembled, integrating wood and creating new types of furnishings.
  • Special attention to natural light, acoustic comfort and visual continuity with the original park designed by landscape architect Pietro Porcinai, through solutions that help reduce environmental impact.
  • The project also included upgrading and improving the energy efficiency of the systems according to energy-optimization criteria, eliminating the use of fossil fuels and making the building “Net Zero” in terms of CO2 emissions, with the goal of achieving LEED and WELL certifications.

Additional spaces have also been redeveloped in architectural continuity with the main building and Niemeyer’s original project, including the piazza facing Palazzo Niemeyer and the Centro Servizi, a circular structure overlooking the lake and park, which houses a café and a company restaurant. The restaurant has been made independently accessible, allowing more convenient and flexible use of the more than 5,000 square meters of multifunctional space.

Beyond Palazzo Niemeyer: redevelopment of the entire iconic campus

The drivers behind the redevelopment of Palazzo Niemeyer – employee wellbeing, environmental sustainability and energy efficiency – also guide the additional interventions planned across the rest of the iconic corporate campus. The aim of the redevelopment project initiated by Generali Real Estate is to further enhance the uniqueness of this green space on the edge of Milan, transforming it into a contemporary and sustainable workplace.

Between late 2025 and early 2026, work will focus primarily on Cascina Tregarezzo, a traditional Lombard rural farmhouse that has been expanded and redeveloped in a contemporary key. The integration of the historic building with glass structures and a steel portico has created a unique space where the charm of tradition is elevated by modern architecture. The current works, scheduled for completion in early 2026, aim at energy efficiency and decarbonization according to the highest standards (LEED certification is underway), as well as improving occupant wellbeing. The interior spaces, comprising about 4,000 square meters of offices over two floors, will also be made more flexible and accessible.

Over 20,000 visitors make “Focus Live-Passione” a record edition at the National Museum of Science and Technology in Milan

The eighth edition of Focus’ Festival of Knowledge saw all events, talks, workshops, and interactive experiences with science and innovation figures sell out.

Focus Live, Focus magazine’s festival of knowledge, set a new record this year, attracting over 20,000 visitors across the three days of the event. This was the eighth consecutive edition, held in collaboration with the Leonardo da Vinci National Museum of Science and Technology in Milan.

Demonstrating the success of the formula and the brand’s strength in the digital and social space, over 10 million users were reached – a significant increase compared to the 2024 edition – through posts, stories, and videos shared across the web, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. All content will remain available and will continue to be enriched with new material for both young and adult enthusiasts.

From Friday 7 to Sunday 9 November, Focus Live – Passione  featured 120 guest, including astronauts, scientists, Olympic champions, researchers, and science communicators, as well as comedians, singers, and chefs, who animated the Main Stage, Speakers’ Corner, Creators’ Corner, and the Kids Area curated by Focus Junior.

“Focus Live is proof that a passion for knowledge brings people together and breaks down all boundaries,” said Gian Mattia Bazzoli, Director of Focus. “It’s not just a festival; it’s a celebration of curiosity and a demonstration that science, when shared with passion, becomes a powerful driver of community. The real magic of this event is its ability to transform science communication, often experienced through a page or screen, into a tangible, shared, and often highly entertaining experience.”

All 100+ events sold out, making the eighth edition of the festival truly special. Talks, workshops, and shows across various scientific disciplines – linked by this year’s theme of passion – prompted participants to reflect on the fundamental role of science in shaping our future.

Contributing to the outstanding success of Focus Live were the leading figures from the worlds of science and beyond, who allowed attendees to experience the future firsthand, engage with the present of research, and rediscover the passion that drives science. Highlights included: ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti, who opened the festival sharing her space passions and daily challenges; CERN physicist Guido Tonelli, discussing the concept of the void; journalist Beatrice Mautino; science communicator Massimo Temporelli; Luciano Pinotti and Enzo Spisni; Pierdomenico Perata from the Sant’Anna School of Pisa; scientist-criminologist Gian Maria Campedelli; Olympic gold medallist Mara Navarria in the team épée at Paris 2024; astrophysicist Amedeo Balbi; communicator Federico Taddia; neurosurgeon Christian Brogna; journalist and writer Matteo Bordone, who engaged in a playful challenge with ethologist Monica Battini; Elio e le Storie Tese; biotechnologist Marco Martinelli; and master chocolatier Ernst Knam. The lineup also included representatives from the Milano-Cortina 2026 Foundation and the Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin.

At Focus Live, science is not just watched or listened to: it’s experienced and done firsthand. The true heart of the Festival lies in the installations and workshops of the Experience Area, a multiverse of discovery where every corner promises a new adventure. This year too, Focus Live gave countless visitors the chance to travel into the past or dive into the future through virtual reality, escape rooms, and much more, experiencing firsthand how science and technology are shaping the world around us. The experiences in the Experience Area were made possible thanks to installations curated by exceptional partners such as ENI, Humanitas University, Scuola Sant’Anna, Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Fondazione AIRC, Università Cattolica di Milano, and Politecnico di Torino.

For children and teenagers, the Kids Area curated by Focus Junior offered an even richer program: from workshops organized by Mondadori Education and Jordan Oral Care to drawing workshops, STEM activities, VR experiences from the Frasassi Caves, and a new “offline” play area to test skills with Kapla building blocks, chess, and origami, rediscovering the joy of analog play.

“We shared three wonderful days with the children at Focus Live, witnessing their natural curiosity and eagerness to experiment,” said Sarah Pozzoli, Director of Focus Junior. “The Focus Junior Kids Area team carefully selected the STEAM activities to offer. We are delighted to see that when the program is of high quality, the audience responds with great enthusiasm.”

On Friday and Saturday evenings, two thrilling shows entertained the audience: La scienza vista dal Basso, a quiz hosted by the irresistible Federico Basso that turned curious questions and scientific knowledge into a hilarious game blending education and laughter; and Murder at the Museum, where Massimo Polidoro guided the audience through the scene of a crime that took place among the halls of the Leonardo da Vinci Museum.” A captivating crime night showing how science, psychology, and the scientific method help investigators solve even the most complex cases. Two evenings, two different ways to experience science communication. Engaging, entertaining, and full of wonder.

The festival will close on Sunday at 6:30 pm with Luca Perri and Giacomo Moro Mauretto in La passione è un motore o un freno a mano?

Mondadori Store supports the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women with “Facciamo luce”

Culture as a light to overcome gender-based violence: an awareness campaign that encourages reflection and deeper understanding through reading and open dialogue

To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25 November, Mondadori Store, Italy’s largest bookstore network, is launching the awareness campaign “Facciamo luce”: a week of events, testimonies and activities designed to spark shared reflection on the issue of gender-based violence.

The initiative, which begins on Monday 17 November, highlights knowledge as one of the key tools for building a culture rooted in respect and equality. The campaign’s claim, “Facciamo luce”(Let’s shed some light), is grounded in this very principle, celebrating the power of reading, books and words as drivers of change.

The project will unfold across all physical and digital Mondadori Store channels, from bookstores to social media and the e-commerce site mondadoristore.it.   • Adjusted EBITDA at € 128.6 million compared to € 133.3 million in the first nine months of 2024;

  • Strong cash generation confirmed with LTM Ordinary Cash Flow of € 62 million;
  • IFRS 16 net financial position of € -233.3 million, from € -229.7 million at 30 September 2024

OUTLOOK: 2025 GUIDANCE CONFIRMED

In line with previous forecasts:

  • low single-digit revenue growth;
  • low single-digit growth of Adjusted EBITDA with margins stable at around 17%;
  • expectations for a significant cash generation capacity confirmed;
  • group net financial debt (IFRS 16) expected, at end FY 2025, as 1.0x adjusted EBITDA (from 1.1x at end 2024); NFP (no IFRS 16) expected to improve to 0.5x adjusted EBITDA (no IFRS 16).

Today, the meeting of the Board of Directors of Arnoldo Mondadori Editore S.p.A., chaired by Marina Berlusconi, reviewed and approved the Interim Management Statement at 30 September 2025 presented by Chief Executive Officer Antonio Porro.

“During the first nine months of 2025, the Mondadori Group recorded results in line with forecasts due to the effect of the significant growth of the book market, which, as expected, took concrete form during the third quarter”, declared Antonio Porro, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of the Mondadori Group. “In this context, Trade Books clearly outperformed the market with a sell-out in the third quarter, rising by 7.5%, thanks to the success of numerous new publications released by our publishing houses, with positive effects that ran through equally in October. The sector’s dynamism was also reflected in the results of our network of bookstores, which will be strengthened, inter alia, with the acquisition of a further ten directly managed stores. As regards Education Books, our publishing houses have confirmed their leadership position, recording a slight increase in the adoptions portion. In the Media area, the growth of the digital component continued, which today accounts for around 50% of the Area’s revenue and margins. These results allow us to confirm achievement of the targets defined for FY 2025”, Mr Porro concluded.

PERFORMANCE AT 30 SEPTEMBER 2025

During the first nine months of FY 2025, consolidated revenue stood at € 704.5 million, showing substantial stability compared to the previous year (€ 705.8 million in the same period of 2024).
Like-for-like, revenue declined slightly, equal to 1%.

Adjusted EBITDA, equal to € 128.6 million, showed a decline of € 4.7 million compared to the € 133.3 million of the same period of 2024, mainly due to the impact in the Trade Books area of the end of the Colosseum concession in April 2024 and the failure to repeat the commercial transaction of Star Comics, which was implemented in January 2024.

The Group’s reported EBITDA for the first nine months of 2025 amounted to € 126.3 million, showing a decrease of around € 8 million compared to the same period of the previous year, which had benefited from lower non-recurring expense and the release of certain provisions in the Media area that had originally been set aside for potential liabilities which ultimately did not materialise.

Mondadori Group EBIT is positive for € 78.3 million: the downturn, equal to € 10 million compared with the same period of FY 2024, is due not only to the factors that determined a decline in EBITDA, but also to greater amortisation/depreciation for a total of € 2.2 million recorded during the period under review and concentrated particularly on the Trade Books area and the Retail area as a consequence of the development of directly owned stores.

Neutralising the extraordinary items and the amortisation deriving from the allocation of the price for the companies acquired in the last five years (PPA), adjusted EBIT for the first nine months of FY 2025 would stand at € 87.1 million, compared with the € 93.6 million of the same period of the previous year, thereby limiting the decline to approximately € 6.5 million.

The consolidated result before tax is positive for € 72.2 million, down by approximately € 10 million compared to the € 82.4 million of 30 September 2024, due to an increase of € 0.6 million in financial expense; by contrast, a higher contribution of approximately € 0.4 million was made by associates.

Tax costs for the first nine months of 2025 totalled € 20.3 million, a reduction compared with the € 21.6 million at 30 September 2024 due to the lower pre-tax result.

The Group’s net profit at 30 September 2025, after minority interests, was positive at € 51.7 million, down compared to the € 59.3 million recorded in the first nine months of FY 2024; minority interest profits were lower compared to the same period of the previous year due to the increase – with a view to consolidation – in the stakes held in ALI (+25%) and in Edizioni Star Comics (+24.5%).

Adjusted net Profit, neutralised of all non-recurring items and amortisation deriving from the price purchase allocation (PPA) for the companies acquired in the last five years, net of the related tax effect, would be € 58.1 million compared to € 63.1 million for the same period of the previous year.

The Net Financial Position excluding IFRS 16 at 30 September 2025 was € -155 million (net debt), a slight increase compared to the € -150.9 million at 30 September 2024.
The relevant business cash generation made it possible to finance the acquisition of Fatto in Casa da Benedetta as well as the growing remuneration of shareholders without substantially increasing the Group’s financial exposure.
The Net Financial Position IFRS 16 at 30 September 2025, equal to € -233.3 million (net debt), grew by approximately € 4 million from the € -229.7 million at 30 September 2024.

Cash flow from ordinary operations (i.e. after cash-out for financial expense and tax) for the twelve months preceding 30 September 2025 amounted to approximately € 62 million, enabling to continue financing the development strategy without compromising the Group’s financial soundness and further strengthening.
As at 30 September 2025, extraordinary cash flow was negative by approximately € 28 million, mainly due to cash-out related to net balance of acquisitions and disposals for around € 15 million, restructuring costs of around € 4 million and the costs relating to the renovation of the Segrate headquarters of around € 4 million.

As a result, Free Cash Flow as at 30 September 2025 was positive at € 34.5 million, confirming the Group’s ability to self-finance its inorganic growth strategy and to increasingly remunerate its shareholders.

The Group has in fact booked shareholder dividends of € 36.5 million (of which 50% was distributed in May, while the remainder, as already disclosed to the market, will be paid on 26 November 2025 with ex-dividend date of 24 November and record date of 25 November 2025).

OUTLOOK FOR THE YEAR

The economic-financial data achieved in the first nine months of the year are in line with forecasts, which considered an overall weakness of the book market for the whole of the first half of 2025 (-5%[1]) and a gradual recovery during the second part of the year compared with the previous year, as effectively was seen in the third quarter of 2025 (+3.9%).
Accordingly, the Mondadori Group confirms the guidance for FY 2025.

Income Statement:

  • low single-digit revenue growth;
  • low single-digit growth of Adjusted EBITDA and, therefore, margins stable at around 17%.

Cash Flow and Net Financial Position:

  • the Group is expected to confirm its significant capacity to generate cash, despite a different scheduling of the publishing plan of the Trade Books area that should result in a partial postponing of collections from late 2025 to early 2026;
  • the Group’s Net Financial Debt (IFRS 16) is expected to come in, at end FY 2025, as 0x adjusted EBITDA (from 1.1x at end 2024), while NFP (no IFRS 16) is expected to improve to 0.5x adjusted EBITDA (no IFRS 16).

PERFORMANCE OF BUSINESS AREAS

TRADE BOOKS AREA

The first half of 2025 saw a negative trend in the Book market, with a value downturn, in the first six months of the current year, of 5%, largely due to the replacement of the “APP18” with the Carte della Cultura e del Merito  (Culture and Merit Cards) and the program of new publications released by the publishers during the half year. The third quarter of 2025, by contrast, showed a clear reversal of trend with market growth of around 4% compared to the same quarter of 2024. Overall, the first nine months of the year have revealed a slight downturn for the market (-2%) compared to the previous year; in terms of quantities, the copies of books sold have declined by 2.7% compared to the same period of last year.

In this context, the Mondadori Group publishing houses recorded significant third quarter growth (+7.5%), which led to a reduction of sell-out during the first nine months of the year to 1.8%.

This important result, easily outperforming the market, was achieved also thanks to a publishing plan that saw the publication of bestsellers in September, including: “L’ultimo segreto” (The Secret of Secrets), Dan Brown’s latest novel (Rizzoli), which, after 8 years of nothing, in just four weeks sold more than 150 thousand copies, and “Il cerchio dei giorni” (Circle of Days), the latest work by Ken Follett (Mondadori).
The Mondadori Group has therefore maintained its national leadership with a market share of 28.1% at September 2025, stable compared with the same period of the previous year.
As evidence of the quality of its publications, the Mondadori Group has, during the first nine months, positioned three titles in the classification of the period’s top 5 bestsellers, including, in particular, “L’ultimo segreto” (The Secret of Secrets) by Dan Brown (Rizzoli), in first place, “Spera. L’autobiografia” (Hope) by Pope Francis (Mondadori) and “Verrà l’alba, starai bene” by Gianluca Gotto (Mondadori).

During the first nine months of FY 2025, the Trade Books area’s revenue amounted to € 279 million, a slight decrease versus the prior year (-1%).

Adjusted EBITDA came to € 37.1 million, showing a decline of around € 5 million due to the lesser margin deriving from the end, in April 2024, of the concession related to operations in the Colosseum area and the commercial transaction of the publisher Star Comics, which was implemented during the early months of 2024. It is stressed that in the third quarter of 2025 alone, the Area’s Adjusted EBITDA grew by around € 2 million compared with the same period of 2024.

EDUCATION BOOKS AREA

The Mondadori Group publishing houses involved in School textbooks have confirmed their market leadership position with a portion (adoptions) of 32.5%[2], a slight increase on the figure recorded the previous year, as a result of more marked growth in the primary school segment and essential stability in secondary schools.

During the first nine months of 2025, the Education Books area business recorded total revenue for € 213.8 million, showing essential stability compared to the same period of 2024 (€ 213.9 million). Revenue performance was impacted by the bringing forward of restocking in the first half of the year, above all for wholesalers and key accounts.

Adjusted EBITDA for the first nine months of FY 2025 came to € 74 million, slightly better than the € 73.8 million of the same period of 2024.

RETAIL AREA

As previously stated, there was a 2% decline in the book market in Italy in the first nine months of the year compared to 2024, with substantial stability of the physical channel (-0.2%) and a negative trend in the online channel (decline estimated at around 5%).

In this context, Mondadori Retail showed generally excellent resilience, clearly outperforming the market: the Area recorded significant growth in terms of sell-out, equal to +3% in the first nine months of the year and +7.4% in the third quarter alone.

Consequently, the market share of Mondadori Retail came to 14% (+0.7% compared with the first nine months of last year), showing further progress thanks to the contribution made by directly-managed stores and franchises, whose market share on the physical channel approached 20%.

In the first nine months of 2025, the Retail area – including revenue from comics and the e-commerce website of Star Shop Retail, consolidated as of 1 February 2024 – recorded total revenue (book and non-book) for € 148 million, changing by € 4.2 million (equivalent to growth of 2.9% compared to the previous year).

Organic revenue growth (excluding revenue from Star Shop Retail) came to +2.4%, and would have been even stronger and at 3.5% without the negative impact (approximately € 1.5 million in the first half of 2025) of the temporary closure of the Rizzoli bookshop in Milan due to the refurbishment works.

The Retail Area presented adjusted EBITDA of € 10.2 million, growth by approximately € 0.7 million versus the same period of the prior year. This result confirms a continued upward trajectory and steady improvement in performance over recent years, achieved despite the negative impact (€ 0.5 million) resulting from the temporary closure for refurbishment of the Rizzoli bookshop in Milan.

MEDIA AREA

During the first nine months of 2025, the Media area recorded revenue of € 104.7 million, showing a slight decline of 1.6% compared to the same period of the previous year, as a result of the structural downturn of traditional business, almost entirely offset by the strong growth in the Digital component. The third quarter was characterised by a general slowing of the advertising market[3].

In particular:

  • digital assets, which account for approximately 50% of total area revenue, showed, in FY 2025, growth of 2% (approximately +4% like-for-like), deriving, in particular, from the positive performance of the MarTech segment (approximately +6%) and the excellent results recorded by the social agency, as well as the contribution made by Fatto in casa da Benedetta (+9%);
  • the traditional print business declined by 9% approximately, due to the structural drop in add-on sales and readership during the period under review.

Adjusted EBITDA for the Media area came to € 14.4 million in the first nine months of FY 2025, showing growth of approximately 12% compared with the previous year, a growth due to both the digital and traditional business segments. In particular:

  • in the print area, despite the reduction in circulation revenue, the greater income deriving from government contributions have successfully improved the margin by approximately € 0.7 million;
  • in the digital area, Adjusted EBITDA was up by around € 0.8 million compared to the same period in the previous year, thanks to the higher revenue recorded during the period, as well as the contribution made by the activities in connection with the brand Fatto in Casa da Benedetta.

CONSOLIDATED FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS OF THIRD QUARTER 2025

The consolidated revenue of the third quarter of 2025 came to € 314.9 million, showing, compared with the same quarter of the previous year, a decline of around € 4 million, deriving for approximately € 8 million from the advance of revenues in the first half of 2025 for restocking of key accounts, net of which revenue would have shown growth of 1.3%.

The recovery trend recorded by the book market during the third quarter had a positive impact on the Trade Books and Retail areas during the quarter under review:

  • revenue of Trade Books recorded a significant 6% increase, with sell-out up by 7.5% thanks to the excellent performance of new publications;
  • revenue posted by the Retail area improved by 3% compared with the same period of the previous year, thanks to growth of almost 6% in book revenue.

Adjusted EBITDA for the third quarter of 2025 came to € 88.1 million, down € 4.3 million compared with the same quarter of 2024, entirely due to the advance of the margin recorded during the first half of 2025 by the Education Books area for approximately € 4.5 million.

START OF SHARE BUYBACK PROGRAM TO SERVICE THE 2025-2027, 2024-2026 AND 2023-2025 PERFORMANCE SHARE PLANS

The Board of Directors approved the start of a share buyback program, under Article 5 of Regulation (EU) no. 596/2014, to be executed in accordance with the terms and conditions, already disclosed to the public, resolved by the Ordinary Shareholders’ Meeting of 16 April 2025 which, among other things, authorized:

  • the purchase of treasury shares for a maximum amount of up to 0.32% of the share capital, which is intended to provide the Company with maximum no. 836,710 shares required over the three-year period to meet the obligations under the 2025-2027 Performance Share Plan established by the same Shareholders’ Meeting, pursuant to Article 114-bis of the TUF;
  • the continuation of the share buyback program to be allocated to serve the latest stock option plans in place, in particular the 2024-2026 Performance Share Plan and the 2023-2025 Performance Share Plan.

All in the manner described in the relevant Plan Regulations.

Pursuant to Delegated Regulation (EU) 2016/1052, details of the buyback program are shown below:

  • Purpose of the progam

The sole purpose of the program is the buyback of Arnoldo Mondadori Editore S.p.A. treasury shares to service the current Performance Share Plan and referring to the three-year periods 2025-2027, 2024-2026 and 2023-2025.

  • Maximum amount in cash allocated to the program

Buybacks will be made at a minimum unit price not lower than the official Stock Exchange price on the day before the purchase transaction, reduced by 20%, and at a maximum unit price not higher than the official Stock Exchange price on the day before the purchase transaction, increased by 10%. The volumes and unit purchase prices will, however, be defined in accordance with the conditions governed by Article 3 of EU Delegated Regulation 2016/1052. Specifically, no shares may be purchased at a price higher than the higher between the price of the last independent trade and the price of the highest current independent bid on the trading venue where the purchase is carried out. In terms of volumes, daily purchase amounts will not exceed 25% of the daily average volume of Mondadori shares traded over the 20 trading days before the dates of purchase.

  • Maximum number of shares to purchase

Purchases will regard a maximum of no. 700,000 ordinary shares (equal to 0.267%) of the share capital, taking account of the treasury shares already held in the Company’s portfolio, to service the aforementioned Performance Share Plans.
The maximum total amount of shares under the program is therefore within the limits of 10% of the share capital indicated by the Shareholders’ Meeting of 16 April 2025, taking account also of the no. 760,697 treasury shares, equal to 0.290% of the share capital, already held by the Company to date.

  • Duration of the program

The buyback program runs from 7 January 2026. The conclusion of the program, in any case by the Shareholders’ Meeting convened to approve the financial statements at 31 December 2025, the date on which authorisation to purchase treasury shares resolved by the Shareholders’ Meeting of 16 April 2025 expires, will be disclosed to the market.
The buyback program may be renewed upon further authorization by the shareholders.

  • Buyback procedures

The buyback program will be coordinated and executed by an authorized intermediary, who will make the purchases independently, with no influence from Arnoldo Mondadori Editore S.p.A. as regards the timing of the purchases.
Buybacks will be made pursuant to the combined provisions of Article 132 of Legislative Decree no. 58/1998, of Article 5 of Regulation (EU) 596/2014, Article 144-bis paragraph 1 letter b) of the Issuers’ Regulation, and the EU and national legislation on market abuse (including Delegated Regulation (EU) 2016/1052), in accordance with the resolutions of the above Shareholders’ Meeting of 16 April 2025.

Our publishing houses at BookCity Milano 2025

From November 10 to 16, the event dedicated to books and reading will kick off with a rich program of events, presentations, and meetings: discover our events

Once again this year, Milan will host the fourteenth edition of BookCity Milano, an event dedicated to the entire book industry promoted by the Assessorato alla Cultura del Comune di Milano and the Fondazione BOOKCITY MILANO.

The theme chosen for 2025 is “The Power of Ideas / The Ideas of Power”, an invitation to promote collective reflection on the two-way relationship between ideas and power. The city will therefore become the stage for a huge debate on stories from the past, present, and future, in the knowledge that books are a necessary heritage for imagining and planning the individual and collective future.

The opening night will be held at the Teatro Dal Verme on Wednesday, November 12, at 8 p.m. and will be hosted by journalist and author Giovanna Zucconi with a musical interlude by pianist Enrico Zanisi. Guests of honor will be author Colum McCann, who will receive the Seal of the City from Mayor Giuseppe Sala, and journalist and writer Cecilia Sala.

Over five days, 52 bookshops, 62 libraries, and 403 venues in Milan and neighboring cities will host over 1,300 events and more than 2,700 participants. We at the Mondadori Group will also be present with our publishing houses and the INTERNI brand.
